Welcoming a new Blogging Assistant

I remember having a little do-it-yourself kit for furniture. The set, if used properly, would produce a neat pair of tiny chairs and a round-table. It’s another matter that the toy furniture would be too small to use (I remember having tried). As I grew older, watching the furniture kept neatly on the windowsill, I would visualize a large armchair I could keep in my balcony. I could then make myself comfortable, listen to the birds singing in the evening, serenade a keyboard and lo and behold, the words would flow! Except that the proposition had one major problem.

While I possess a fairly loyal laptop (it hasn’t fallen off my hands/been stolen once in all these years), it doesn’t fit in with the scheme of things in this hallowed balcony I am referring to.

I mean, imagine lush green trees and imagine a big, bulky laptop on my lap. Moreover, much can’t be said about my internet data-card or my laptop’s battery backup. I guess I would look a funny sight rushing in and out to charge my batteries. Or the laptop’s. You get the idea.

This is where the Dell Venue tablet comes in. You probably remember this new companion of mine, the one who helps me tune out noise. In this mission, it goes one step ahead. It helps me attune to the very sounds this noisy city suppresses in her fist. With the Dell Venue, I can now get on to Wi-Fi (no nonsense to be taken anymore from the data-card), logon to my WordPress application and bingo. I have it all in front of me – the dashboard, the posts, the blogosphere. The tablet is just the right size and lets me be comfortable in my armchair (yes, I now have one). Far from the maddening crowd, I am free to be keyed in to all my thoughts, to key in all my thoughts. The tablet has decent battery backup and this is considering I also use it extensively for A/V content. To be charged once (and not plugged out in between!) in a couple of days and we are done.

While the Dell Venue is proving to be a capable companion to me as a blogger, this is a competence that is extremely malleable. I have a feeling it could come in handy for me as a social-networker, an information-seeker and a reader. Enjoying other blog posts and commenting on the same, for instance, is enhanced manifold due to the portability and efficiency the tablet provides. Akin to rides on the Delhi Metro, this could come in handy at all sticky locations – a boring party, a sickly meeting, and an incessantly chattering acquaintance.

I still have the furniture set on the windowsill. There’s an umbrella too, which can be pinned onto the top of the table. The umbrella reminds me of the impending rains. I will sit in my balcony then, with a bowl of pakoras and a cup of coffee. Guess what I will capture then? The rhymes the raindrops compose.

Stay tuned for more on this, shortly.

  2. Hi Deboshree, can you please shed some light on how easy or difficult it is to use the Dell tab. I was thinking about gifting one to my parents for their anniversary & this tab sounds really good 🙂 My only concern is how easy / difficult will it be for them to use. They can use the computers for there small needs, but my father gets stuck on Nokia Lumia 😐
Will be grateful if you can help me 🙂

    • Ritu, the tablet is super user-friendly. It is an Android OS so pretty much in the league of all those smartphones out in the market…I admit Lumia can be a bit tricky. I have friends who have complained of the same. I don’t think your parents will find this one difficult to use; I will shed further light on this in my next post. Hope that helps you arrive at a decision. 🙂
Welcome to Saddi Delhi, by the by. 🙂

  3. Hey, I love your blog! I am planning to buy this tab for my dad for his birthday.. Any idea about pricing and how long does the battery last? Thanks for sharing your review..

    • Hey Rahul, welcome to Saddi Delhi. 🙂
That sounds like a great idea. You can get all details about the tablet here.
Dell has a decent battery back-up. It should last you a couple of days if used moderately (read: low on A/V and Wi-Fi use).

  4. The balcony pic is serene Debs!! Wish I had something like that!!

and I’ve been using a Dell Laptop for years now and touchwood its been a fine companion 🙂
I also have a Nexus Tablet, but I use the laptop for writing and the Tablet for playing games or reading ebooks! 😀

    • Yeah, the balcony is great isn’t it? I too wish I had something like that! 😛
Ditto on the Dell laptop. It has served me well all these years.
How is the Nexus tablet, Pixie? I have heard good things about it…Though I must say, Dell is proving to be a trustworthy companion in this form as well.

      • Nexus is good if you don’t overload it with Apps. If that happens, charging and battery life slowly becomes an issue as the tablet grows older.

  5. Aww.. Debo, first I love the balcony pic. It is awesome! How relaxing it is to sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy in the balcony na? Aww.. I so love that experience. .especially on a rainy day 🙂

And, I do have a laptop, a tablet and an iPhone. I only used my tablet for a week or so when it was brand new.. iphone is much more comfortable for me you know.. These days, Lime uses the tablet to watch cartoon or listen to rhymes. I know its fancier and not so good for him… 😦 So, I’m planning to hide it in a safe place where he wouldn’t reach…

    • All this talk about balconies and rains and coffee on a Friday afternoon make me pine for the day to wrap up soon. 🙂 Absolutely Lavender, that experience is amazing!
Ah, so you have the full menagerie. 😉 Sometimes, certain devices develop uses with time. Entertainment is certainly an all-encompassing head but there are several other utilities, as my averse-to-intrusive-technology-self is finding out.

Kids these days learn so fast. I agree with you – sometimes we really need to draw a line. But where will this place that he couldn’t reach be? I was planning something similar the other day, when a little cousin of mine was due to arrive. Nothing could stay hidden from the detective, trust me. 😦

  6. I have a tab since last two years. I love watching videos, reading books and articles on it. Some games that are high on graphics look so much cooler on a tab than on the smaller screen of a smartphone. Recently, when my sister returned from a trip to Goa and sent scores of pics on WhatsApp, I first transferred them all to my tab before going through them at leisure. Viewing them on the small screen just wouldn’t have been as much fun.
By the way, I would like to know more about this Dell Blogger Review program. Being a tech blogger, this looks very interesting to me.

    • Hey Jyoti, it’s good to hear from you after quite a long time. Hope you have been well. 🙂
I totally concur with your point about graphics – there are certain applications/games/images that come alive on tablets like never before! It’s like a new dimension altogether. I am experiencing this every day.
Sure, I will write to you separately on the Dell Blogger Review program.

  7. That’s a lovely balcony 🙂 I’m a little hesitant to buy a tablet mainly because of the fear of dropping it – funny, I know, but the number of times my poor phone has been dropped makes me scared. Plus I prefer a full keyboard to type. But the new Dell tab did intrigue me. Looking forward to your detailed review so that I won’t be on the fence about this anymore!

    • Welcome to Saddi Delhi, Zahida. 🙂
Oh the fear of dropping is a major one indeed! But one tends to get over it with time, trust me on that.
I can understand your point about a full keyboard. The Dell series does offer that, as I have found out. You might like to check this out.
Yes, I will be posting more reviews in the coming months and I hope they will help you arrive at a decision. 🙂

    • Welcome to Saddi Delhi, Priya! 🙂 Do keep me posted if you decide to buy this one; it has so far seemed like a worthy choice to me.
Glad you enjoyed the review. Hope to see you around more often. 🙂

  8. I was most comfortable with my bulky laptop until the iPhone 5s came along. Since then I addicted to blogging, micro blogging – read tweeting, editing pictures for my food posts, on my iPhone 5s. my daughter uses a tablet and seems very comfortable using it. She never lets me even touch it because she thinks I will spoil it!!!! For someone like me who was so technologically challenged, I surprise myself each time I download an app on my phone to make life a bit more easy and interesting.

    • Kudos to the daughter, Anita! 🙂 The little ones these days learn so fast, it’s unbelievable.
I can totally relate to your use-case pattern. A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have thought I would have enjoyed the presence of such technical, mechanized devices in my life. But now that I see their utility – to blogging, to relaxing – I am much more open to the idea. Do keep me posted on interesting apps, by the by. 😀

  9. I have a tablet , after the intital week or two I must say it is staying put on the study table as I rarely use it anymore ..

now i think why i bought it … maybe i shud use it often .. we buy things sometimes without thinking 🙂

    a good review though 🙂

    how you doing debs …

    • While I agree Bikram (we do buy a lot of things on impulse), a tablet can come in handy as I am finding out. Maybe you too should try using it more often lest it become defunct whiling away time on your desk. 😀 😉

I am doing okay. It has started raining in Delhi and we finally have some respite from the heat! 🙂 How are you Biks?

    • Exactly Vishal. 🙂

Errm, my armchair doesn’t look as pretty as the one here but it ain’t bad. 🙂 I am planning to invest in another one now that Delhi is in for some delightful rain! 🙂

  10. i am still confused if i have to buy a tablet.. if i buy, i am sure bunty is going to take it from me.. may be i will be spoiling her with the technology.. though she can learn all her rhythms and alphabets using it.. oh yes, my heart would be breaking every time she drops it on floor..:(.. so the dilemma still continues..

    • I can understand your dilemma, A. I too remain old-school about this. While it is true that tablets today allow kids to learn the simpler, fancier way, I am averse to exposing them to certain technology too early. Nothing the good old books and good old nature can’t teach reallly. 🙂

But otherwise, the device could come in handy for you – to entertain, to find new ways to make learning fun for your kid, to learn damage control tricks when devices fall on the floor… 😛 😛
